Newborn Lifestyle - FAQ

WHAT DOES LIFESTYLE ACTUALLY MEAN?

Genuine, natural, true to life. I’m not going to overly pose you or your newborn baby, I will ask you to cuddle them, look at them, kiss them, love them. I do swaddle them and capture them in their nursery or even on your bed. I document all of those tiny details, such as their hair, their toes, their tiny little nose and lips. I’m capturing your new family as you really are, where you are the most comfortable, and that is at home.

HOW DO WE SCHEDULE IF I DON’T KNOW WHEN BABY WILL ARRIVE?

As we are shooting more natural images, there is not a need to shoot in the first 5-10 days. Head home, settle in to your new way of life, get comfortable holding baby, feeding baby and getting to know one another. Every labour delivery is very different and sometimes you all need a few extra days to settle in and recover. So I aim to schedule your session in the first 7-14 days but one month is just as good. So… go with your gut feeling and choose a date that feels right for you!

WHAT IF I GO BEFORE OR AFTER MY DUE DATE?

When we book a newborn session, I put your date in my calendar. I only take a certain number of newborn sessions per month to make sure I am free because we all know their arrival can be a little hard to predict! and thats ok.. we forgive them right!

WHEN DO YOU SHOOT IN HOME NEWBORN SESSIONS?

Generally I’m shooting in home newborn sessions on Wednesday afternoons or Sunday mornings! When I arrive you are still figuring out your new bundle and their "schedule". Please speak up if you notice that baby is fussy in the mornings for example or extra adorable and snuggly in the late afternoon!

Light also play's a a big part in our start time if possible. If there is ZERO natural light coming into a room that you know you want photos in during the morning hours, we will most likely move the session to accommodate!

DO YOU COME TO THE HOSPITAL TO TAKE PHOTOS?

YES I DO! And I love it! Those first days with your baby are absolutely worth documenting. I offer fresh 48 sessions.

HOW LONG DOES A SESSION GO FOR?

Baby is the boss here, they will run the show. And I’m 100% ok with that. Your session will last around 1-2 hours. This allows time for feeding, nappy changes, etc.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?

Baby – I bring some neutral swaddle cloths. When I arrive, have wee one dressed in a simple onesie. Neutrals, neutral print/stripes are always best! Avoid logos, bright colours etc..

Parents and siblings – Neutrals, or at least avoiding colours that cast unnatural colour onto skin. Wear something comfortable, but something that you want to see in photographs.

I go into more detail with clients before their session and am always happy to help make suggestions/selections.

CAN GRANDPARENTS BE IN THE SESSION?

YES! Short and sweet. Yes. Have them show up for a portion of the session, what amazing memories they will help make!

CAN YOU PHOTOGRAPH MY PETS WITH THE BABY?

Of course!! Before I had my first born I only had time for Boston and Zoe… our doggy fur-babies! I always try my hardest to capture babies with their fur siblings. That being said, If a pet is not comfortable around baby yet or just has no interest in photos it may not happen, it doesn’t mean that I won’t try for you. It’s ‘safety first’ with pets, please trust that they will not be overly jumpy around your baby, etc.

WHAT IF SIBLINGS AREN’T COOPERATIVE?

A new sibling is a big thing for any child, no matter their age, on top of that another person coming into their family home to take photos of them can be nerve wracking, or even annoying! Its my goal to make them feel just as special as the baby and also have a few ways to get them involved to achieve those adorable siblings shots! Please know also that I have two little ones of my own so I’ve lived it. I photographed them together all throughout those newborn days. It takes some extra patience, which I just so happen to have!

WHAT IF THE NURSERY ISN’T FINISHED OR OUR HOUSE IS NOT INSTRAGRAM WORTHY?

I love a well done nursery. They are beautiful and take so much work, planning, and love. I’ll always want to celebrate that effort, and shoot in the nursery. But... Life happens and a nursery that is not finished or even there at all is just fine, they sleep in with you anyway right! I am shooting in your home. So cuddle up together on the couch or the master bed. Sit near a window or on the deck if it’s nice outside. If you are just loving on your brand new baby, it won’t matter where you are. Light and emotion trump a million dollar looking nursery. Catch yourself a break… you just had a baby!! I’m not showing up to see if you’ve tidied up.

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT DURING THE SESSION?

I get to your home with a few swaddles, a step, some clean socks ( for standing on your beds! ) and a bunch of camera gear!s When I arrive I will ask you to show me around. This is when I’m looking for the light in your home and coming up with a plan of attack! I’ll ask a bunch of questions, while I prep my gear. “When did baby last eat? How was delivery? Remind me again if you had any special items we need to work into the session.” Etc…

I usually try to photograph baby alone right after they eat, when they are sleepy and content. Other than that I bounce around taking turns asking everyone to hold baby. It’s truly as simple as that and I really do shoot it all – diaper changes, feeding (if you’re comfortable), the laughs, the yawns, baby toes… all that love.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SESSION?

I deliver galleries within 3-4 weeks of the session, but you will get a sneak peek within 24 hours! You will receive and email with a link to your gallery as well as a one-click download of all of your original hi-resolution edited images.
